抄録：
　まず，認知症，認知機能低下に関する疫学研究を行うにあたって理解すべき背景を述べる．すなわち，認知症が生涯にわたってさまざまな原因を有する多因子性疾患であるという概念，現在までに確定された認知症のリスクファクター，新たにリスクファクターとして加えられるために必要な要件，遺伝要因の重要性および遺伝要因と環境（後天）要因の交互作用を紹介する．そのうえで，近年増加している“歯の状態や口腔機能が認知機能に関連する”という研究結果に対する批判的意見も紹介する．
　次に，我々が2010年に開始した疫学研究（SONIC研究）の結果を紹介する．SONIC研究は，高齢者を対象とした文理融合型の老年学の学際的研究であり，医学，心理学・社会学，栄養疫学，そして歯科医学の各分野の専門家がそれぞれの研究領域のデータを取得している．そのため，我々は，質の高いさまざまな長期縦断データを用いて，口腔と心身の健康との関連について検討をすることができ，多くのエビデンスを構築してきた．本稿では，特に，口腔と認知機能についての結果を紹介する．

Abstract：
First, I explain the background necessary for conducting epidemiological studies of dementia and cognitive impairment. I present the concept of dementia and cognitive decline as a lifelong multifactorial disease, their risk factors identified to date, the requirements for adding a new risk factor, and the importance of genetic factors and genetic-environmental interactions. In addition, I introduce a critical view of the research, which has increased in recent years, that “dental status or oral function is related to cognitive function”.
Next, I present an epidemiological study (SONIC study) that we started in 2010. The SONIC study is an interdisciplinary gerontological study that combines the arts and sciences, with experts in medicine, psychology/sociology, nutritional epidemiology and dentistry. As a result, we have been able to use high quality data to examine the relationship between oral health and mental and physical health, and have generated a large body of evidence. In this article, I will focus on the fi ndings relating to oral health and cognitive function.
